Red pandas have the looks of both a raccoon and a panda bear. This rather cute mammal is mostly found in mountains on India as well as in Nepal.
Red pandas are herbivores and thus chew on green leaves and other vegetations whenever they feel hungry. They are small in size compared to other bears (around 60 cm in length), and have thick fur. Their fur color is usually between vivid and dark brown.
Their feet are covered with a thicker layer of fur, allowing them to walk through snowy areas very easily. They also have claws that help them, in addition to a thumb-like bone, to hold objects just like any panda bear does when eating bamboos.
Red Pandas are sometimes called 'The wha' because of the very unique sound they produce that just looks like a 'wah'. They are to be considered as a very endangered species, and that is why they are not to be chased and killed. Despite them being able to endure cold, red pandas like to live in temperatures averaging at around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit), and at high altitudes that has some forestation around it.
They usually like to hang out on tree branches (their weight is in their favor), and they usually spend the night in caves or nests they make on their own.
Red pandas do not like to be kept in a narrow place. They love nature and would rather look depressed and inactive (and may develop aggressive behavior) if placed in a closed place. They do not like sudden changes of climates as they do not adapt very easily. This is why, whenever a hot weather is in the air, we can see them sleeping under some shadow, and then wake up and become more active as the sun fades a bit.
One could not deny that red pandas got skills when it comes to jumping from branch to branch and from tree to tree. But despite this joyful trend, they prefer to stay alone and hate blending into groups of red pandas. This condition is of course void when it comes to mating seasons.
Red pandas, like cats, tend to wash their fur by themselves. They lick their paws and then pass it over the head, body and feet, making them one of the cleanest types of bears around.
As we mentioned before, red pandas hate to be in company of humans (as well as other predators). Despite their innocent look, if they are not able to find a quick escape, they are ready to stand up on their back feet, allowing them to show off their claws, and giving them the ease of attacking what faces it.
Red Pandas love to eat bamboos, like the normal panda we all know about. Another common characteristic with the red and black giant pandas is that they keep on eating bamboos and other fruits all day long because their digestive system does not allow them to digest cellulose.
On a side note, the popular firefox internet browser released by mozilla, has the red panda as its logo.
